Making an Alaia is doable for anyone!
What Is an Alaia?
An alaia is a thin, round-nosed, typically square-tailed wooden surfboard first ridden in pre-20th century Hawaii. They are different from modern surfboards in that they have no fins and instead rely on the sharpness of the edges to hold the board in the face of the wave.
Why Make an Alaia?
There’s something satisfying about riding a board you made. The first alaia I made was for decoration. But as soon as I finished it I had to make one to ride. Using a hand planer and palm sander, it took forever to make. But, when I felt the speed on those first few waves, I was hooked.
Why Use Paulownia wood?
Paulownia is unique. Like balsa, it’s one of the lighter woods you can find to make ocean crafts. Unlike balsa and most other lightweight woods, its tight grain doesn’t allow it to soak up much water. Actually, it’s commonly used in Japanese cabinetry as it’s known to keep moisture out.
